Beyond the Door of No Return

“Beyond the Door of No Return” by David Diop (Senegal)

Synopsis

Paris, 1806. The renowned botanist Michel Adanson is dying. His last word is a woman’s name: Maram. But who was she?

Searching for the answer, Adanson’s daughter discovers a journal of his youthful travels in Senegal, which tells a story of wild adventure and impossible desires. It reveals how he heard of a young woman sold into slavery who did the impossible and returned. How he became obsessed with finding her, whatever the cost. And how a man who longed to solve the mysteries of nature instead found himself grappling with the impulses of the heart.

Review

“Beyond the Door of No Return” begins with a slow and somewhat dry start, but it quickly transforms into a gripping and well-written narrative as it progresses. Readers enjoyed the middle and later sections, particularly the vivid descriptions of the protagonist’s travels in Senegal, viewed through the unique lens of this 18th-century French botanist’s youth. Though the contemporary stylistic choices feel anachronistic to the period, the writing is engaging and layered, giving hints at the brutal truths of the colonial era without overt moralizing. Readers liked the use of Wolof, and the protagonist’s reflections on how language can help in the understanding of the people he encounters.

The story excels in its exploration of themes like language, identity, and power, especially through the unforgettable character of Maram. Readers were particularly drawn to this powerful young woman, who they felt symbolizes not only the hardships of African slaves but also the broader struggles of women in the face of predatory exploitation. The ending offers a sharp, thought-provoking reflection on colonialism, leaving readers with lingering questions about the author’s intentions and his use of historical figures and art. This is a book that surprises, educates, and warrants a second read to uncover its full depth.

This fourth book of Season 25 scored 8.1 out of 10.
