The Power of Positive

“Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Power of Positive” by Jack Canfield, et al

Review

There are 101 true stories in this book divided into 11 sections, each one dealing with a different power: from Attitude to Dreaming and Gratitude, from Challenging Yourself to Watching Others. Members of the reading group liked the fact that each story was short, so they could dip into it and read a few whenever they had a moment. Readers took turns to share the story that resonated most with them pointing out the qualities that inspired them: some were touched by the resilience of the narrators in their darkest times; others were impressed by how a simple change in perspective can shift a situation. There were quite a few favourite stories among the lot, but the one that got the resounding agreement was “What is the Higher Response?” They were amazed at how the simple act of taking the time to listen to someone in pain (though demonstrating it in a violent manner) resulted in such a powerful shift (a smile, then laughter). They loved how the narrator, by acting from his higher nature to listen rather than his lower instincts to fight, managed to change a young man’s life forever.

Favourite Quote

“It is during the hard times that we most need to find and acknowledge the good things in our lives. We’re not expected to be thankful for all circumstances, but we are to be thankful in all circumstances.” (p.149, The Journal)
